W. Granville Brown
To me, a writer’s words are his or her
voice. There is no greater gift from the Lord
than
being able to have one’s voice heard and received with power and impact
on people’s lives that can lead to transformation of their mind, body,
soul, and ultimately their lives. If anyone listens to my voice and it
has the power to impact and the ability to transform, it’s not of me it
is of the Lord. I will continue to have a voice, and I pray someone will
listen.
W. Granville Brown graduated from Hamilton University with a degree in
Business Administration after serving proudly in the United States Army.
For the past twenty plus years, he worked hard to build Fita Insurance
Group into a well-respected insurance agency until he sold his business
to pursue other endeavors; that allowed him to use his skills and
experience in sales and marketing.
After many years of writing manuscripts, he overcame his fears and
submitted one to an editor who encouraged him to pursue his life-long
dream of becoming a published author.

PageOnelit.com: Where did you grow up and was reading and writing a
part of your life?
Who were your earliest influences and why?
W. Granville Brown: I’ve been on my own since the age of sixteen. I would
have to say I grew up in the Army and living in Europe and other multiple
cities. I actually started reading in the second grade and the first book I
read was “The Catcher in the Rye.” It freaked my teacher out big-time. I
thought it was a baseball book. For as long as I can remember I’ve written
my thoughts down on everything from a scrap of paper to anything handy.
Reading and writing was and is my greatest exit. As far as earliest
influences I must say it was probably John Steinbeck and one of the greatest
novels ever written, “Of Mice and Men.” That book blew me away when I read
it. When I read I like to play a movie in my mind. And Jackie Collins…I love
her writing style. It’s so simple, direct, and to the point. Although her
books follow similar themes they are always entertaining. Out of all
writers, I would say that’s how I write. I keep it simple.
PageOnelit.com: Briefly tell us a little about your book, Choices. Who are
Trey and Andrea Edwards? Are these characters based on anyone real? Based on
any actual events?
W. Granville Brown: Choices is an age-old story of love,
lust and infidelity. It’s also a play on the Book of Job in the Bible where
God allowed Satan to impose himself into a believer’s life to test his
faith. In the book characters deal with their own human weaknesses and
against the stronger forces that tempt them. In one word I would describe
the book as…temptation. The characters of Trey and Andrea Edwards were
merely people in my imagination. I get this question a lot. They are not
real nor are the events as it was written, however a writer must or should
write about what he or she knows. So I wrote about what I know and have
either seen or experienced in my own life.
PageOnelit.com: Why did you write Choices? What message do you want
readers to take from your book?
W. Granville Brown: Wow…believe it or not that first one
is difficult to answer. My primary motivation for writing a book period was
to fulfill a life-long dream of becoming an author. Not to mention
overcoming….fear. This is the one thing that I’ve wanted, no longed to do
since I could remember. I’ve been blessed in my life to have accomplished
many goals that I’ve set for myself and the one that had eluded me for years
was writing and publishing a book. Fear of rejection, not being good enough,
and not being taken seriously held me back. Then an event happened in my
life that removed that fear and I realized (although I always knew it) that
there truly is nothing to fear but fear itself. So I sat down, finished a
manuscript and here we are. I guess the message contained in the book is a
simple one…no man or woman is above temptation and that at any time there
can come a moment in one’s life where their faith, trust and belief can be
put to the test.
PageOnelit.com: You say “I’ll continue to have a voice, and I pray someone
will listen.” Explain.
W. Granville Brown: I believe that a writer’s written
words are their voices. Whether it’s a fiction writer or someone writing
non-fiction, the writer’s beliefs, mindset, and paradigms come through. Also
the creative process is a skin-peeling one where a person is completely
exposed to the audience they’re attempting to reach. So I think it’s an
honor to have someone take the time to read my words and share in the end
results of my creative process and in doing so I hope that I’m able to
entertain, enlighten and have a positive effect. I fully believe in power
and impact and that the result of both is…transformation. I guess want I’m
really saying is as I further my career and improve as a writer, my sincere
desire is to write stories that are impactful to those that read my books.
PageOnelit.com: Discuss your faith and how it helped you write Choices.
W. Granville Brown: Not to state a cliché, but I’m a
spiritual person with deep-rooted Christian beliefs that’s based more on
actions than mere words. Also I believe in ownership, that as human beings
we are responsible for our actions and reactions. So in writing Choices I
wanted to deal with actions being choices faced and the reactions based on
how one deals with those choices placing ownership and consequences squarely
on the shoulders of the person, making no excuses and accepting the rewards
and the punishment. Which I know is easier said than done, but just because
you haven’t climbed Mt. Everest; it doesn’t mean that I can’t.
PageOnelit.com: What do you hope to achieve with Choices?
W. Granville Brown: I’ve achieved it. I wrote and
published a book. I overcame my fears. I fulfilled a life-long dream and
more than just my Mother bought and read my work. Man…no one can take that
away from me. Long after I’ve passed away…my written voice will live on. And
God-willing…I’ll be of a positive influence in someone’s life. To me that’s
more important than the number of books sold. Corny? Okay, but that’s me.
PageOnelit.com: What was the latest Choice you had to make that was
difficult? What was the outcome?
W. Granville Brown: I wish we were doing this interview
in an expensive restaurant so I could order the most costly dish for you
asking this one. I almost want to say, “No comment.” Okay…here goes. The
last difficult choice I had to make was moving away from my kids after the
divorce. No they weren’t small kids, but your children are your children no
matter the age. I was faced with the choice of staying where I was and being
depressed and in a rut or picking myself up and moving on with my life. And
the outcome is that I don’t get to see them as much as I or they would like.
Granted they’re both young adults and doing their own thing, but one of the
most difficult things about being a divorced man is the feeling that your
role as a Dad has been diminished.
PageOnelit.com: What was the last book you read?
W. Granville Brown: A biography about Lena Horne.
PageOnelit.com: What’s next?
W. Granville Brown: Two things immediately come to mind.
First…marketing Choices and getting my name out there as a new unknown
writer and secondly getting to work on writing the sequel since I purposely
left things open. Then again I’d call it more of a continuation rather than
a sequel.
PageOnelit.com: Do you have any hobbies? What are they? How do they
enhance your writing?
W. Granville Brown: Of course, they are writing, music,
sports, going to the movies and plays and watching people. Have they
enhanced my writing? I don’t know at this stage of my writing life. I
suppose what will enhance my writing lays more in doing and learning how to
do it better.
